چکیده

■ Abstract The influence of surface orography on patterns of precipitation gives rise to some of the most pronounced climate gradients on Earth, and plays a fundamental role in the interaction between the atmosphere and the rest of the Earth System on a wide variety of time scales. The physical mechanisms involved comprise a rich set of interactions encompassing fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and micron-scale cloud processes, as well as being dependent on the larger-scale patterns of the atmospheric general circulation. Investigations into orographic precipitation have pursued three parallel tracks of inquiry: observations, theory, and modeling. Significant advances have been made in each over the last few decades, and these are summarized and synthesized here. While many aspects of the basic mechanisms responsible for orographic precipitation have been understood, important issues remain unresolved. The sheer number of contributing processes, together with their convoluted interactions, make the quantitative prediction of precipitation in complex terrain a very hard task. However, while prediction of precipitation amounts for any given event may be difficult, various lines of evidence suggest that the patterns of orgraphic precipitation, even on scales of a few kilometers, are much more robust.

7.2a Orographic Enhancement of Precipitation in Midlatitudes: Results from Map and Improve Ii

When midlatitude baroclinic systems move over a mountain range, the precipitation from the system intensifies over and sometimes upwind of the slope of the mountain barrier. The maximum precipitation occurs on the lower windward slopes in almost immediate response to the orographically induced lifting of the air such that the maximum precipitation may occur well below the summit of the range (e...

The Response of Orographic Precipitation over Idealized Midlatitude Mountains Due to Global Increases in CO2

The sensitivity of stratiform midlatitude orographic precipitation to global mean temperature is investigated through numerical simulations. As a step toward understanding the relative influence of thermodynamic and dynamical processes on orographic precipitation, simple idealizations of Earth’s major north–south mountain chains are considered. The individual terrain elements occupy four island...

Winter Orographic Precipitation Ratios in the Sierra Nevada—Large-Scale Atmospheric Circulations and Hydrologic Consequences

The extent to which winter precipitation is orographically enhanced within the Sierra Nevada of California varies from storm to storm, and season to season, from occasions when precipitation rates at low and high altitudes are almost the same to instances when precipitation rates at middle elevations (considered here) can be as much as 30 times more than at the base of the range. Analyses of la...

New evidence of orographic precipitation suppression by aerosols in central China

The correlation between light precipitation events and visibility at Mt. Hua, (Shannxi Province, China) and at the surrounding plains stations was analyzed. Trends and changes in visibility, precipitation, the precipitation difference between Mt. Hua and the plains stations (De) and wind speed over the study area during the years 1980–2009 were also investigated. The significant positive correl...

Comparison of Orographic Precipitation in Map and Improve Ii

The Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP) was conducted over the European Alps in September-November 1999. During autumn, heavy rains and floods can occur when baroclinic troughs move over the region, and moist air flows from the Mediterranean Sea toward the southern Alps. Dual-polarimetric Doppler and vertically pointing radar data collected during MAP on the Mediterranean side of the Alps provided...
